'Wandle United!' Riverside Guided Walk

From Plough Lane to Mitcham Junction - a Wandle Fortnight celebration of how the River Wandle connects the people of Merton

'BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO RESIDE ON THE BANKS OF GANGA' was a striking message in huge colourful letters, painted on a wall overlooking the Holy River Ganges in Varanasi, northern India. I'll never forget my visit there or the sense of spirituality that proximity to the waters created. How every aspect of people's lives, from birth to death was connected to the river. In a similar way, my 35 years in south west London has been coloured by my relationship to the River Wandle. Whether its a simple evening walk, family cycle rides, foraging or involvement in community events - this precious little thread of river has healed and nurtured - a sanctuary during COVID, a retreat in times of trouble, a very special place in my heart. And its a similar story for so many people who have come from all over the world to settle in Merton.

Having once again been inspired by the waters through attendance at the glorious Osun River Ritual, I have decided to do a Wandle Walk to demonstrate what the river means to so many people from all over the world - no better time to do that than the launch of Merton United, a celebration of the many cultures and traditions that make this borough such an exciting place to live. All are welcome on this friendly and engaging walk through some of the most beautiful and historic parts of our borough; Wandle Bank, Collywood, Merton Abbey Mills, Morden Hall Park, Ravensbury Park, and Watermeads. Along the way, we'll cover the history, the culture, the food, the stories about the people who've come to live here and found a welcoming home on the banks of the Wandle.

We should be able to cover the planned stretch in three hours but if we need to cut it short we'll not be too far from public transport. We pass refreshment stops along the way (Venezuelan, Thai, Lebanese, Brazilian, Caribbean, Filipino, Sicilian) but no harm in bringing water and a snack. Be sure to check out all the other great events happening in this year's Wandle Fortnight.
